Tito Vilanova, former FC Barcelona coach, who succeeded Pep Guardiola at Barcelona and won the Spanish league title in his only season in charge, died on Friday afternoon aged 45 after a long battle with throat cancer.
FC Barcelona posted a message on the official website, saying: “the Club wishes to express its most heartfelt sympathy to his family, who are being joined in these moments of mourning by FC Barcelona members and fans all around the world, as well as the rest of the footballing and sporting world.”
Barcelona will also open a space in the main grandstand at the Camp Nou Stadium for anyone who wishes to express their condolences, while club President, Josep Bartomeu sent a message on the social media stating that Vilanova was “an eternal reference for FC Barcelona both in human and sporting terms. Thank you for all you have taught us. Rest in Peace.”
